Advanced Virtual Reality Systems at Spanish Universities
Keeping
students at the cutting edge, Spain funds advanced MOCAP and VR systems for
local universities
November 11, 2011 - Madrid, Spain - Ingevideo today announced that Ingevideo has selected Optitrack™ as the motion tracking technology for the supply
of advanced MOCAP systems to universities in Spain as part of a government
funded education project. Students across various disciplines will use the MOCAP
systems as part of their curriculum, improving their opportunities in the job
market, and getting ready to apply MOCAP techniques when starting jobs in
industry and research.

When “Red.es”, an entity of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism
and Trade responsible for driving the information society in Spain, called for
innovative technology solutions to advance the country’s education system,
Ingevideo, specialized in advanced VR & MOCAP systems came up with a
project plan that spiked the interest of government officials. The project had
to be unique and not only technically feasible but also within budget at times
of worldwide economic crisis.
Teaming
up with technology leaders in the visual simulation industry such as WorldViz, Hewlett Packard, Christie Digital, and RealD, Ingevideo proposed to supply Spanish universities
with advanced MOCAP systems to be used in conjunction with immersive multi-wall stereo projection
systems allowing students from interdisciplinary backgrounds to utilize MOCAP
& virtual reality technology for their studies. For this idea and its
successful realization, Ingevideo was chosen by the Spanish Ministry of
Industry, Tourism and Commerce as the top innovative Spanish company to receive
the award and implement the most advanced MOCAP & VR systems at Spanish
Universities.
Miguel
Motos, Director VR & Simulation at Ingevideo comments: “With my fifteen
years of experience in the visual simulation market, it was clear to me that I
needed to team up with a leader in MOCAP tecnology,
but also with a company that could understand the local culture and was open to
collaborate and be open to a win-win relationship. The engineers behind Optitrack™ provide outstanding products, and even
more importantly, with the right type of engineers who did an excellent job in
analyzing the customer requirements and looking into the future of MOCAP & 3D.”
Upon project approval, the
universities received cutting-edge MOCAP & VR systems including Optitrack™ Real Time
optical motion tracking systems, WorldViz Vizard VR software, 3chip digital active stereo projectors,
active 3D glasses, , and high-end graphics workstations.
Ingevideo engineers flew out
to each site in Spain and installed all the components that seamlessly where
integrated into one system.
The universities use their new
MOCAP & visualization centers for historical education projects, psychology
research and engineering applications. In some universities, the university
also intends to make its VR system available to local companies.
Each university has dedicated
a classroom for MOCAP, VR and a mixture of both.
